Have you wanted to make the most of family time but weren’t sure where to start? Today I am sharing 6 easy tips to help bring you all together to have fun as a family. The great thing about these tips, many are low cost and even free.
As my kids have grown older(they are BOTH in college now!) I am finding that it is harder and harder to spend time together. Between us parents working, and the boys in class or spending time with their friends, it is so hard to be in the same place at the same time.
When they were younger, it was much easier to do this. I have to admit, I really miss those times. Between board games, video games, and some time outside with baseball, it was awesome to be together.
I know that times change, and so do family dynamics. So I thought I would share ways for you to makes the most of time with the family.

#1 Get Up And Get Outside To Make The Most Of Family Time
One of the most beneficial activities you can do is to unplug technology and get outside! Now that the snow is starting to go away, and it is staying light out longer, it is the perfect time to step away from the computer and go out and play as a family.
I admit, as a grown woman, I go outside and play Pokemon Go. It is a great way to spend time with my youngest and get exercise at the same time. Sometimes I am even able to get caught up with what is happening in his life. He is my “keep things close” son, so getting him to share is difficult.
When Spring and Summer roll around, I can usually get hubby to get outside walking too! And that is a great time for the two of us to catch up, maybe plan our next vacation.
Getting to see all the Spring flowers is pretty amazing as well. As someone who thrives on sunshine and the beach, this is my favorite activity.
#2 Have A Family Game Night
Another fun (and free) activity is having a game night. We are partial to UNO, Apples to Apples, and anything Big Bang Theory. Whatever your favorite game is, make it a family night. You can even up the stakes by making it a “winner gets out of doing chores” match. You will be amazed how quickly the kids will get involved.
And, while some parents may disagree, having a family video game night is great too. Mario Kart is perfect for the entire family, and even as a date night for us. Again, this is a perfect way to get caught up in a casual and unhurried way.
#3 Spend Time Volunteering As A Family
Feeling good that you are spending so much quality family time together? Spread the love! Head out as a family and pay it forward. Or help a neighbor in need. Whatever tugs on your heart, do it as a family!
We generally spend the most time volunteering together at our church’s annual basket social to raise funds. Everyone gets involved. The boys help deliver the baskets to the winners. My husband helps to move things along. I generally help with setting up the food before heading to my seat to *try* to win something. It doesn’t matter if I do or not because the church ends up being the winner!
#4 Make The Most Of Family Time With A Movie Night
Fun Fact: Here is a great way to spend some quality family time together and save energy too! ENERGY STAR Blu-ray players are, on average, 45% more efficient than conventional models. The money saved will go a long way towards new adventures together.
Generally at Christmas, we have a multitude of movies on our lists. So what better way to enjoy them then having a family movie night? Although, with both kids in college, those times have pretty much disappeared. Instead, it has evolved into date night at home. Which is fine with me too!
#5 Hang Out In The Kitchen
Another activity that perfectly promotes quality family time is cooking some meals together. Between shopping, meal prep & clean-up, many hands make lighter work.
Pull out your slow cooker and create some new slow cooker recipes for your family. Make up some meals you can put in the freezer for later. Whatever you decide, do it together as a family.

#6 Hit The Books With Your Family
And when I say books, I don’t mean working on homework or reading your college textbook. Find some fun activity books for the younger kids. Grab some travel books and plan a Disney cruise. Purchase a video game guide for your latest video game that you can’t quite finish. Did I mention grab some travel books to plan a vacation?? Oh yes I did. I think it is my favorite book-related activity as a family.
If you aren’t into activity books, magazines work just as well. They make good conversation starters regarding sports, travel, & current affairs.
And if you are a blogger like me, I use this time to read some books to help my business.
So I hope that you found these 6 tips to be useful in your own life. Life goes by so fast that you blink, and a certain time period is over. Make the most of your time together. Life is so uncertain anymore that making the most of family time is very important.
Here are some things to get you started on your family time adventure.
