Now that Spring is here, most of us want to clean our home from top to bottom. We feel happy and proud when the clutter and cobwebs are gone. Many are concerned about using cleaning products full of chemicals, many of which are toxic, around their children and pets. Today I am discussing a healthy way to clean your home without chemical cleaners. Here are ways to Spring clean your home with green products.
I have to admit, I have always been skeptical of using products that weren’t from a can or bottle from the grocery store. I guess it is because I grew up in a generation that believed that if it didn’t smell like bleach or disinfectant, then it wasn’t clean. I wanted to get done quick, have it smell clean, and be able to spend time with the family.
I was amazed to learn what these products can do and how you can Spring clean your home with green products. Let’s talk about the best ones out there.
Use Vinegar To Spring Clean Your Home With Green Products
Vinegar has become one of my favorite non-toxic cleaners, and is one of the most popular ones that people use. Vinegar is an acidic cleaner, and because of that, it does a great job cleaning everything from grease to other build-ups.
Another great property of vinegar is it is good for getting rid of pet urine odors and makes a great disinfectant in your washer for linens, towels, and other smelly clothing.
Some ways to use vinegar to clean include: taking a clean rag soaked in a bit of vinegar and use it to make mirrors squeaky clean. It also gives toilet bowls and sinks a shiny(and clean)look. You can also use it on floors by mixing it with water, adding a few drops of soap, then wiping your floor with a rag. All the clean without the chemicals.
Lemons Aren’t Just For Making Lemonade
Similar to vinegar, lemon juice has acidic properties that help it clean. It is particularly useful for cleaning in the kitchen. For instance, how often do you clean your cutting board? It can be a breeding ground for germs, and who wants that on a surface you prepare food on. Clean your cutting boards by slicing a lemon in half, rubbing it into the board, then rinse thoroughly. Lemons can be used in the bathroom, too. If your glass shower door appears scummy, wipe a lemon over them to remove the build-up, then rinse thoroughly.
Many of us use our microwaves on a daily basis, but do you know when you cleaned it last? I have 2 college men that are still at home, and our microwave is almost always a disaster. When you want to Spring clean your home with green products, using lemons in your microwave gives it an incredible clean. Simply place a few tablespoons of lemon juice(or use lemon slices you freshly cut up) into a glass bowl of water, and microwave to a boiling point. The length of time can depend on your microwave, so watch it. Keep the door closed for about 10 minutes, then wipe away with a clean cloth. You will find that the spills wipe away easily.
When you are finished, don’t forget to clean your sponges so they don’t end up smelling stinky. Here is a great resource for how to clean a sponge.
Use Baking Soda As A Green Product When You Clean Your Home
I never knew you could use baking soda to clean the natural way. And that it has some amazing properties like killing viruses, and even cuts grease. I have used it before when I cleaned my carpets after a pet accident, but didn’t realize you could use it for so much more.
For instance, everyone thinks you need to have really harsh smelling cleaners to get rid of that nasty bathtub or shower soap scum. Nope! Just sprinkle some baking soda on a damp cloth and give the scum a good scrub. You will find that it wipes away easily, and you don’t have a harsh smell from the chemicals. I always noticed that bathroom tub cleaners irritated my nose and throat. No more of that when I started using baking soda.
Use Tea Tree Essential Oil To Spring Clean Your Home
One of things I learned when researching green cleaning methods is that essential oils can be used. And here I thought they were only for diffusers! There are many essential oils you can put in your cleaning supplies box, and one of the most popular for cleaning is tea tree oil.
What makes tea tree oil so popular with cleaning? It is antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, AND antifungal. Wow, can you believe all that it can do? I had no idea how effective it was until I started using is. Simply add a few drops into any cleaning solution(for instance vinegar)and water, and it gives it an extra boost. It is so strong when undiluted, that you only need a few drops. It saves you money because it lasts a long time!
Last, But Not Least, Use Olive Oil When You Want To Clean With Green Products
Another little know green cleaning product is olive oil. Not only does it do a great job cleaning, but it is also perfect to add a little shine to your wood surfaces. Why is it so good? Olive oil lifts dirt on your wood surfaces, so it basically cleans as you go and brings out the natural shine of wood surfaces.
If you want it to have an extra pleasant scent, simply add a few drops of orange or lemon oil, and some vinegar if you like. Put this all in a spray bottle, or mix in a bucket and dip your cleaning rag into the solution before wiping the wooden table or floors.
