When power is connected to your online world, it can be pretty devastating. There is also the loss of income that comes with not being about to be online to update and share your blog posts. Don’t panic yet, there are many things bloggers can do when the power is out.
A few year ago, when I was starting to get really serious about my blog, I was trying to write a daily post. So when the power went out and the internet went out, I went into full panic mode. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.
So what do bloggers do when the power is out? You would be surprised what you can do when you don’t have the distraction of the internet. Here are just a few ideas.

Do Some Housework
If you are anything like me, housework often takes a backseat to my blogging. Okay, doing housework may not be at the top of your list, but it is a good time to get things done. You can get some laundry done. Clean up after the pets or scrub some stains on the floor. Spend some time outside doing yard work.
Whatever you have been neglecting while working on your business, now is the time to get it done. Your family will thank you for it.
Draft Some Posts To Upload Later
The last time our power was out, I sat down with my Word program and typed up 7(yes seven!) drafts that I saved. When we finally got the Internet back, I copied them to my editor, formatted them to my site, made a few changes, and added images. I have been more productive with my drafts in the past 3 days than I have over the past 3 months.
See what bloggers can do what the power is out? You would be surprised how much you can get done when you have drafts and outlines to get you started.
Also, if you don’t have enough juice on your laptop to use your WORD program, grab a pen and paper and do some writing the old fashioned way. I wrote this post about how to be vacation ready in 6 easy steps, and I think it was much more detailed than when I draft on the computer. Who knew?
Clean Out Your Desk Area While The Power Is Out
If you are anything like me, my blogging workstation consists of scraps of paper from brainstorming, post-it note reminders, and a bunch of pens.
Having no Internet is a great time to straighten that area up. I also took some time to update my paper planner. I realized that there were appointments I forgot to add to the large family calendar on the wall, so it turned out to be a real blessing that I had to update the planner when we had no power.
Back-Up Files And Photos To An External Hard Drive
I can’t stress enough the importance of this. Especially when you have kittens. How do I know this? Because I left my laptop open when I preparing to back-up my files and walked away. They decided to take a stroll on my laptop and managed to delete all my files. And I didn’t have it set up to put them in the recycling bin first. Yeah, it wasn’t a pretty sight. I did manage to recover some of them, but it was a hard lesson learned.
Update Blog Financials If You Use a Paper Accounting System
Make a list of income or expenses you have done for the month, so that when you are back up and running, you can quickly upload the information to your computer. I created a spreadsheet in Excel, and update it each month. When tax time rolls around, I just need to print it off and hand it to my husband. He does the rest.
Make A List Of Posts To Update When The Power Comes Back On
I just recently started an Excel sheet for this, and have the Office Suite on my phone. I can open up my file, find one that is relevant, and make notes. If you don’t mind using the data on your phone, you can start doing some research.
Take Time To Read Some Books
No power? Grab a book that will help your business, head outside to enjoy some sunshine and read to learn something new that you can use on your blog. Here is what I am reading now:

Bloggers Can Brainstorm A New Keyword Plan When The Power Is Out
I am the first to admit that I am terrible about coming up with keywords because I get distracted by the Internet. So I grabbed some pen and paper, and got to work.
Lots of scraps later, I did come up with a plan. So every time the power is out, I outline a new post around that keyword.
Does a keyword plan confuse you? Kelli and Crystal from Learn To Blog can help you with that. Head over to their site and grab a customized keyword plan to get you on your way to success. It will be one of the best investments on your blog!
When The Power Is Out, Go Out And Take Some Stock Photos
Some of the best things bloggers can do when the power is out is head outside and take pictures! I hate having to rely on stock photos when I can do some of my own. So depending on the time of year, it is great to get photos of all those items outside that can help make a post awesome!
So these are just a few of the things bloggers can do when the power is out. They can all enhance your business. Be self-care to you. Or bless your family. Whatever you choose to do, know that it will benefit you in the short and long term.
